The hedgehog is of course an important environmental indicator, with its habitat, its ability to occupy 30 hectares of land, and its particular relationship to the hibernaculum, by which I mean the hedgehog's ability, almost uniquely among animals in the United Kingdom, to go into a state of genuine hibernation.
